Halloween is fast approaching and every college student on the planet — or at least at Ohio University — is looking for a costume to wear for the infamous Halloweekend. It’s finally time to wear the costumes we want without our moms worried we are going to catch a cold. This leaves us with a world of possibilities that are difficult to choose from. So, here are five different types of costumes that will make you stand out for your upcoming Halloween festivities.

  1. The Funny Costume

If you’re the comedic relief in your friend group, picking a funny costume for this season may just be the answer for you. Thankfully enough, this category is vast and you can dress any way you truly want. Whether choosing to keep yourself warm for the cold October weekend or choosing to make a sexy version of your hilarious pick, the possibilities are endless. Examples include dressing up as a minion, the infamous Gargamel from “The Smurfs”  or finally everyone’s favorite orange villain Vector from “Despicable Me.” You are sure to make your friends laugh at your amusing pick.

2. The Scary Costume

For some, Halloween costumes should only be taken in the literal sense. Isn’t the whole point to scare others on this night of fight? Whether choosing to go as your favorite serial killer anywhere from the notorious Hannibal Lector to the mind-chilling “Silence of the Lambs” or dressing up as the killer from the hit slasher “Scream,” some costumes really are meant to represent the essence of the holiday. For those horror movie-obsessed, a frightening costume may be the answer to a fantastic and spooky Halloween night.

3. The Sexy Costume

As college students, dressing up sexy for a Halloween costume is practically a right of passage. Although this may leave you cold as the temperature continues to fall, a sexy costume may be just the way to make you feel good about yourself and have fun with your look. The ever-iconic Playboy bunny costume is a go-to for the sexy Halloween look. Other classics include a scandalous cat or a cheetah, or even a sexy version of an occupation, such as a nurse or school teacher.

4. The Quintessential Costume

The list for this category goes on and on. Whether choosing to do your very own version of the infamous Marilyn Monroe and her flowy white skirt or braving the cold for a Marie Antoinette look that is sure to take the cake, so many well-known and well-recognized costumes can have different interpretations, making them super original and creative. The key is making sure characters who could be considered more niche are as recognizable as possible. You don’t want to have people asking you who you are all night.

5. The Dainty Costume

Finally, for the cute, clean girls going out this Halloween, there are so many ways to make your costumes delicate and beautiful. The classic ballerina costume or using a slip dress to create a sweet and subtle princess costume may be just the ticket to showing your flirty and girly personality through your Halloween choice. The biggest thing to watch out for is not spilling any fake blood on your delicate design, as getting the stain out may be harder work than you may want to put in.

No matter what your costume is this Halloween season, the most important part is to remember to wear something that you feel comfortable in and that makes you happy. It’s also important to remember that a culture is not a costume and that if you have to question whether a costume may be considered offensive, it’s probably best not to wear it. With that said, have a lovely and safe Halloweekend and enjoy the festivities in the look that fits you!
