FIVE TIPS ON FOLLOWING THE “COASTAL GRANDDAUGHTER” AESTHETIC

Originally popularized by the fans of the TV show “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” the “coastal granddaughter" look has become a popular, easy, and chic option for the summer.  Whether you enjoy eating lobster rolls on a beach in Nantucket, taking your golden retriever for a stroll along Martha’s Vineyard, or swimming on the shores of Cousins’ Beach, the “coastal granddaughter” aesthetic has become a must-have look.

Colors seen in this aesthetic often include tones of navy blue, eggshell white, and sea moss green, reminiscent of a summer spent in the sand. Here are the top five staple pieces to put in your closet to follow this timeless style.

The American flag knitted crewneck

Whether you originally saw this trend on TikTok Shop or as they appeared in almost every store, the American flag knitted crew neck has become a staple for girls trying to fit the coastal granddaughter aesthetic. This sweater is perfect for celebrating the Fourth of July and elevates any beach outfit to an “old-money” look.

Seashell accessories

Everyone remembers the classic puka shell necklace which made its appearance in 2019 and the infamous “VSCO girl” phase. However, this type of seashell accessory is much dantier. Whether a small bracelet with gold-crusted shells or earrings with marine life accents, seashell accessories give off the perfect summer beach vibe.

The more modern take on puka shell necklaces can entail a white beaded necklace with a puka shell pendant as in the picture shown, or some sort of variation with other types of beads. These necklaces are great for layering with other jewelry.

Long white skirts

Long white skirts are just a general staple for the summer. Although they don't have to fit into the classic old-money aesthetic, these skirts can be worn with almost anything and can elevate an outfit to make it more elegant or simply a touch more girly. Whether pairing it with a navy blue bandeau top, a bodysuit with a jean jacket, or a graphic tee, a long, white skirt effortlessly ties an outfit together.

 Linen pants

Linen pants continue to be a popular closet staple for its simplicity and subtle elegance. Often seen in the European summer look, linen pants can be dressed up to add to a business casual look, but can also be worn throughout the summer more casually.  Whether paired with a pair of Adidas Gazelles or a pair of chunky heels, everyone needs a solid pair of linen pants for their closet this summer.

 Striped button-down shirts

Whether dressing it up with some linen pants and a dainty pair of strappy heels or using it to cover up a bathing suit after the beach, a striped button-down shirt looks classy while having the comfort of a light and breezy top to combat the summer heat. Dress shirts come in a variety of different colors and patterns, making it a staple piece that ties any outfit together.
